What is chiropractic?
The most common perception is that chiropractic is a treatment for back pain. There is no drug free alternative that is more effective in relieving back pain than chiropractic and that is why the perception of "chiropractic treats back pain" is so widespread. Yet, there is much more to it than back pain.
Chiropractic was founded on the fact that your body has an inborn or innate intelligence. This innate intelligence controls and coordinates every function of your body, from kicking a soccer ball to pumping 2,100 gallons of blood through your 62,000 miles of blood vessels EVERY day! There is no process in our body that is not controlled by your innate intelligence.
This innate intelligence is expressed through your nerve system, consisting of your brain (containing 100 billion nerve cells!), your spinal cord, and your 45 miles of nerves traveling throughout your body. This is the reason that we, as chiropractors, are so interested in the function of your nerve system. It is quite literally the connection between your mind and your body.
Due to the fact that your brain, spinal cord, and spinal nerves are so fragile, your body is designed so that they are encased in hard bone. Your brain is safely protected by your skull and your spinal cord and spinal nerves are held within your spinal column. Unfortunately, misalignments in your spine, called subluxations, can put pressure on your spinal cord and spinal nerves. Research at the University of Colorado has shown that the pressure of only 10mm of mercury (the weight of a dime!) will cause significant interference to the transmission of nerve impulses.
What does this mean for you? It means that if you have a subluxation in your spine, you have interference to the connection between your mind and your body. This is interference to the ability of your innate intelligence to do it's job properly. The result of this is that you experience less than your optimal health.
The goal of chiropractic care is to relieve and remove this irritaion to your nerve system thereby allowing your innate intellegence to do it's job properly. In other words, regular chiropractic care helps you to function at your best!
A study by the Gallup Organization determined that 90 percent of chiropractic patients rated their treatment as effective, and 80 percent were satisfied with the treatment they received and felt that most of their expectations were met.
